The 2011 Spring Auction proved to be a fun and entertaining evening out! While the financials have not yet been disclosed, all indications are that the night was profitable for St. Thomas Parish Day School and thus our children.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and making the night a success! A special thanks goes out to the many volunteers who made the night possible by planning and organizing the event; decorating the hall; and of course provided services, items, or solicited donations to be auctioned.

2011 Spring Auction ~ Friday, March 4, 2011

The 2011 Spring Auction will be held on Friday, March 4, 2011, beginning at 6:30pm. This fun-filled evening will include raffles, a silent auction and an entertaining live auction featuring a variety of enticing items including autographed memorabilia from local sports teams and personalities!

Tickets are $20 each. Dinner and drinks are included with your ticket!

Executive Board Positions:

President ~ The President conducts general business meetings and meetings of the Board. The President is also responsible for direct communication with the Church officials, for conducting and reporting an annual parent evaluation of the school and ensuring the adherence to all school policies and procedures.

Vice President ~ The Vice President handles registration and enrollment and assists the President in discharge of his/her duties.

Treasurer ~ The Treasurer collects, disburses and records all monies.

Recording Secretary ~ The Recording Secretary keeps minutes of all membership and Board meetings.

Co-Op Community Jobs:

Fundraising Committee ~ A fundraising coordinator will oversee the school fundraising efforts, including the following Fundraising Committee jobs:

Original Works
Fundraising Sales (wrapping paper, pizza, etc.)
Retail rewards programs
Box Tops
Fall Fling (1-2 people will work together to coordinate a group to execute the fall fundraising event)
Spring Auction (1-2 people will work together to coordinate a group to execute the event)

Enrichment ~ One to two parents will work together to coordinate and implement enrichment efforts for the school. Past activities have included a Magazine Drive for the troops, canned food drives and Adopt-a-Family efforts during the holidays.

Two's Class Assistant ~ The volunteer must be available to serve as the teacher's assistant in the two's classroom every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9am-11:15am.

Class Parents ~ Class parents (one to two for each class) are responsible for helping to coordinate class parties, class contributions to fundraisers, teacher gifts, etc. throughout the school year.

Health Parents ~ Health Parents (one for each class) are responsible for collecting the required health forms from their particular class, making student folders and filing the forms at school.

Scheduling Parents ~ Scheduling parents (one for each class) are responsible for setting the monthly co-op schedules for their individual classes.

Social Committee ~ A Social Committee Chairperson will be responsible for overseeing and helping with the execution of the following Social Committee responsibilities:

Playdates and Family Days (Community Calendar)

Santa Night Coordinator ~ One to two volunteers will be responsible for assisting teachers in making sure program is well planned and executed, setting up chairs, creating programs, securing a Santa volunteer, organizing refreshments and cleaning up after the event.

Open House Coordinators ~ One to two volunteers will be responsible for setting dates and coordinating volunteers for Open House registration events.

Website & Facebook ~ One to two volunteers will maintain the school's online presence. The website uses Blogger software and administering the Facebook page requires volunteer to have a Facebook account themselves.

Advertising Coordinators ~ One to two volunteers will be responsible for coordinating monthly advertisement with Baltimore's Child magazine, designing and implementing other marketing strategies to increase the school's presence in the market and build enrollment.

Housekeeping Coordinators ~ One to two volunteers will be responsible for maintaining the housekeeping supply closet and setting the bi-monthly cleaning schedule.

Photography Parent ~ Volunteer will be responsible for taking photographs at school events, field trips, etc. for use on the school website and Facebook page and for maintaining student "photo release forms."

Fall Fling ~ 10/23/10!

Our annual Fall Fling fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, October 23rd from 11am-1pm! We hope you will join us for this fun event featuring games and crafts for the kids, raffle items and a bake sale!

Wristbands will be available for purchase for $12 in advance / $15 at the door. Additional tickets will be needed for the crafts and these tickets will be available at the door for $1 per ticket.

The children thoroughly enjoyed feeding the Murray's sheep, taking a hayride and exploring the garden! After a fun day at the farm, the children enjoyed a picnic lunch with friends! St. Thomas Parish Cooperative Day School is located on the beautiful grounds of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Owings Mills, Maryland. Although the school is non-denominational, we do provide a Christian atmosphere. The primary goals of St. Thomas Parish Cooperative Day School are:

To encourage the individual development of the preschool child
To provide a successful transition between home and school
To provide an environment for cooperative involvement for parents

The varied program is intended to help each child achieve independence, self-expression, improved sensory and motor skills and a sense of responsibility. The program includes structured activities such as story time, circle time, snack time and field trips, as well as free play.

One special and integral aspect of St. Thomas Parish Day School is parent participation which offers the parent the unique opporunity to share and enjoy their child's first school experience! Parents participating in the co-op are required to assist in their child's classroom approximately once per month. Along with providing the teachers wtih an extra pair of eyes, hands and ears, the participating parent is also responsible for selecting and bringing a healthy snack for the children. Your partipation day is truly a memorable experience!

St. Thomas Parish Cooperative Day School meets all the accreditation requirements of the Maryland State Department of Education.

The St. Thomas two year-old program uses a thematic approach that integrates reading, math, science, social studies, music and art. Simplicity is the keynote of the program during the first few months of school. Group time activities are kept simple and short. As the children become familiar with the classroom routine, gain confidence and feel comfortable in their school environment, the time given to group and individual activities changes accordingly.

The Kindergarten program at St. Thomas Parish Cooperative Day School offers a continuation of your child’s preschool education in a small, family-oriented school setting. We enroll a maximum of 12 students to our program, so that we may offer more individualized instruction.

The Kindergarten program uses a thematic approach that integrates reading, writing, math, science social studies, art and music. The program gives each student the opportunity to participate through hands-on experiences and child-centered activities. All of our curriculum areas promote independence, creativity, social awareness and strong self esteem.

Journals are used to organize your child’s writing and show progressive development throughout the year. The method of inventive spelling is successful in the pre-writing process.

We use many manipulatives in our math program in an effort to guide your child in forming a concrete foundation of the underlying themes of math.

Tuition payments may be made monthly, quarterly or on an annual basis. The first tuition payment (along with a one-time $50 school liability insurance fee per child) is due upon receipt of the contract and the remaining payments are to be received on or before the first of every month beginning in September. Younger siblings enrolled in the same school year receive a 10% tuition discount.

Tuition rates for the 2012-2013 School Year are as follows:

What is a Co-Op?

St. Thomas Parish Cooperative Day School operates a cooperative preschool program, meaning the school is totally managed and funded by its participating families. The benefits of such an environment are far-reaching. There is an established sense of community, of independently providing for the needs of our children and of caring and comaraderie. Our children not only receive an opportunity to socialize and learn, but they also witness their family and other adults working together constructively.

This type of role modeling is invaluable, but it is not without some additional effort on the part of the co-op families. The following is a list of cooperative family responsibilities, which we all share and which we all agree to when enrolling in St. Thomas Parish Cooperative Day School.

Participation in the Classroom ~ Parents of the 2, 3 and 4 year-old groups will participate in the classroom on a rotating basis. Depending on current class size, this will be no more than three times per month. Specific duties will be determined by the teacher but will likely include bringing class snack as well as assisting the teacher during the daily class instruction. Parents are required by Maryland State Law to provide a medical release form before they may participate in the co-op activities.

Taking on a Co-Op Job: As a co-op, St. Thomas essentially belongs to the parents of the school. By choosing to enroll in this type of preschool, you have the unique opportunity to be an integral part of your child's early education. To that end, each preschool family is required to volunteer to hold at least one job within the co-op. A list of jobs can be found here.

Participation in the Spring Auction ~ In late February or early March, St. Thomas Parish Cooperative Day School hosts an Auction Dinner as the primary fundraising effort of the school year. This enjoyable evening features raffles, a silent auction and a live auction with many enticing items, often including autographed memorabilia from local sports teams! Each year, our goal is for the auction to raise a total of $10,000 to help cover the operating expenses of the school. Families are required to assist with at least one auction planning committee.

Attendance at the Orientation Meeting ~ This meeting is typically scheduled the week before school begins. It is a time to meet the other families, receive an annual calendar and daily schedule, become acquainted with the policies and procedures of the school and gain familiarity with the physical environment.

Attendance at the Parents' Meetings ~ There are usually 2-3 meetings scheduled per year. These meetings can be compared to PTA meetings. The Board reports on each of the committees, there is a forum for concerns and issues raised, and business and work issues are addressed.

Participation in School Cleaning ~ The school is thoroughly cleaned by our participating families every other month during the school year. Each family is scheduled once during the year to be a part of the cleaning crew, which meets on Saturday at the school.

There are two non co-op spots available in the preschool classes. These spots eliminate the parents from the classroom rotation and school cleaning participation but does not relieve them of their fundraising or meeting attendance responsibilities.

There are many opportunites for families to serve the co-op environment. Although it does require a bit more time and effort, it affords the participant a greater sense of connection to the school and a greater degree of influence in the daily operations and future direction of the co-op. The co-op also hosts several social events to further promote the community and camaraderie of the school. We encourage you to get involved and look forward to working with you!

Admission Procedures

Registration opens in January for the following school year. Applications are filed according to the date they are received. Families currently enrolled at St. Thomas and St. Thomas parishioners will be given preference if applications are received during in-house registration. Enrollment contract offers will be mailed out in February and initial class lists will be created March 1st. Those admitted or on the waiting list will be notified of their status. Remaining vacancies in any classes will continue to be filled in order of receipt.

A non-refundable registration fee of $40 must accompany the preschool registration form. The registration fee for the kindergarten program is $55. The fee for siblings enrolled in the same school year is an additional $20 per child.

Enrollment is open to all, regardless of race, creed or national origin. All students are required to have medical records on file before the child may attend school.

The 2 year-old program requires your child to turn 2 by September 1st and the Kindergarten program requires your child to turn 5 by September 1st.
